The graveyard will be regenerated as a public garden
|
Work has begun to restore a graveyard in Cheltenham in honour of the smallpox vaccination pioneer Edward Jenner who lived there between 1795 and 1820.
The Jenner Gardens are set in the cemetery of Cheltenham Chapel just off the lower High Street.
Over the coming months paths and railings will be improved and repair work carried out to boundary walls.
A statue of Jenner and a series of information panels telling his story will provide a focal point.
Milestone reached
The gardens will also benefit from a new planting scheme, including wildflowers to attract birds and insects, creating a colourful, wildlife friendly space.
Claire Stenson, landscape architect at Cheltenham Borough Council, said: "We have been working with the friends group for the last four years to regenerate the graveyard as a public garden and are very grateful to them for their commitment to this project."
The work is being funded from a variety of sources: £40,000 from the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust; £10,000 from BBC Breathing Places; £10,000 from the Summerfield Trust; and £10,000 from Cheltenham Borough Council.
Mike Rigby, Secretary of the Friends group, said: "We have put quite a few hours into this over the last few years and the start of the landscape works is a milestone for us."
